An Improvement Cycle: A Structured Way To Cut Costs

How do people...

know what to work on when they start a new shift?

At shift handover the new shift has to get up to speed quickly. A glance at the screen at each workstation tells the incoming crew exactly what's happened.

Shift handovers take just a few moments. The new crew has solid data to work with. Operator comments are instantly available, so everyone can get good detail.

At the daily meeting it's the same. Plant and operations managers can see exactly what's been happening over the previous 24 hours. So can the engineers and trades people.

The weekly shift report builds day by day for each line, automatically, as the week unfolds.

Actions for the new shift are quickly allocated. Each action is recorded in real time in the Action Tracker. A review at end of shift, or at the start of the next shift keeps everyone accountable and makes sure things get done on time.

The big picture...

matters if people are to work on the important, not just the urgent.

A weekly steering meeting chaired by the plant or production manager reviews the data and identifies the top things to be addressed.

OEE gives a headline view of the performance trend. The Top Opportunities report lets everyone see the issues that are costing the most.

Actions are assigned, with a completion date, and entered in the Action Tracker. Individual actions are emailed to or printed for the person responsible.

Each meeting starts with a review of the outstanding actions, to make sure people are held accountable and actions completed on time. The statistics show how well people have done.

Executive control...

matters. True Opportunity® provides information to monthly executive steering so you can keep the improvement cycle on track.

The Opportunity Matrix and Top Opportunities tell you how much money has been saved, and what people should focus on next.

The Action Tracker statistics show you how well people have executed their tasks.

The Solution Library™ statistics show how many problems have been eliminated.

It's easy to see who is on top of things, and which parts of the organization need a little help.

A fact-based approach...

Every day your people allocate resources. How do they do this? What guides their decisions? What data do they use? How do they tackle their top problems? How are people held accountable?

Hagen & Co's True Opportunity™ and Solution Library™ software, process optimization and improvement training and services sit at the heart of a simple business improvement cycle. Use the workstation screen to brief the incoming shift on the top issues. Use OEE and the Top Opportunity reports to identify the top priorities at the weekly steering meeting.

Use the Action Tracker to track actions and hold people accountable. Use Solution Library™ resources to find or create genuine root cause solutions for the top problems. Use the True Opportunity™ reports and statistics at monthly executive steering meetings to keep the improvement cycle on track.

Hagen consultants provide True Opportunity™ and Solution Library™ software training and business and industrial management and consulting services to get the most from the tools. Many people have found this simple, fact-based approach central in creating a high-performance, low cost culture.
